Congratulations to Amrita Acharya for her remarkable achievement in winning first place in the biological science category at the North Carolina Science & Engineering Fair. She received this recognition for her exceptional research paper titled “A Comprehensive Survey of Genomic Alterations in PIK3CA Oncogene in Breast Cancer.” Through bioinformatics analysis, she delved into the role of PIK3CA amplification and its impact on cancer progression, highlighting its significance in breast cancer studies.
Amrita is a high school student at Green Hope High School in North Carolina. She actively participates as the programming lead for Team FRC 5190 (Green Hope Falcons) in the FIRST Robotics competition, reaching the state level. She also achieved the title of state champion in the You Be the Chemist Challenge. Additionally, Amrita received grand and state recognitions through her participation in the Duke Talent Identification Program.
Her involvement in various projects demonstrates her commitment to STEM. Amrita participated in the Congressional App Challenge 2021, developing the CIRRUS app to address global warming and climate studies. She also joined the ChickTech/NetApp Data Explorers Program, where she analysed and predicted data related to the percentage of children living in poverty in different counties across North Carolina. Furthermore, she pursued a research paper on treating cervical cancer using CRISPR-Cas9 in the Duke TIP summer eStudies program.
