High School Student Researcher Blu on Ghost in the Shell: How Hollywood Constructs Asia as “The Orient”

Blu Tran, hailing from Episcopal High School in the USA, is known for her keen interest in social science and arts. She participated in the school newspaper and literary magazine and currently serves as a staff writer and layout editor. She has also been involved in theatre.

Her primary aspiration is to amplify the voices of those who lack the privilege to do so themselves. Blu also contributes to her community by tutoring younger students in English and older high school students in Maths and Science. She has received several awards, including recognition for Excellent Academic Performance, winning the District Persuasive Writing Contest, and being honoured with the Altruistic Member of the Community Award.

As a participant in the CCIR Academy, Blu conducted a research project titled “Ghost in the Shell: How Hollywood Constructs Asia as ‘The Orient’.” Her research paper is concerned with issues of cultural representation, Orientalism, and identity within Hollywood. It seeks to critically assess how Hollywood constructs and portrays Asia, aiming to shed light on broader questions of cultural appropriation and representation within the film industry. Blu’s research paper contributes to a deeper understanding of how popular media shapes our perceptions of different cultures and regions.

In an episode of CCIR Academy Student Spotlights, Blu candidly shares her insights on her research journey and acknowledges the support provided by her professor and the CCIR Academy throughout her research endeavours.
