High School Student Researcher Claudia on Viewing the Musical Theatre Industry in China

Tianyi (Claudia) Li, a high school student at Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School in China, has an impressive list of honours and awards, including National Bronze in Health Education from the Health Occupation Student Association (HOSA). She also qualified for the Global Tournament in this competition. Furthermore, she has received the Community and Culture Heritage Excellent Award in the Youth Observation Competition (YOC) and the Supreme Award of the Junior High School in the English Speech and Debate Marathon (ESDP).

In addition to her academic achievements, Tianyi demonstrates her passion for music and theatre through her role as the Founder and President of the Musical Club at her school. Within this capacity, she led routine sessions aimed at practising excerpts of musicals, which were later recorded in the school studio. She incorporated regular vocal, speech, and acting sessions to build essential skills for musical performances.

Tianyi’s engagement extends to her role as the Director of the Art Department in the Student Council. She organises on-campus shows and also founded the annual summertime prom, an after-school party designed to foster social connections and inspire students in a joyful atmosphere.

In her role with Sparks, an online teaching educational association, Tianyi serves as an English teacher, where she has taught four children from rural areas of China in online English classes. She has been actively engaged in charitable endeavors, providing books and financial support to individuals in need.

Within the CCIR Academy, Tianyi undertook a research project titled “Viewing the Musical Theatre Industry in China: The Significance of ‘Cultural Aptness’ to its Flourishment.” This research paper delves into how cultural factors influence the development and success of the musical theatre industry in China. It explores questions related to how well musical theatre aligns with Chinese cultural preferences, values, and traditions and how this alignment impacts the growth and popularity of musical theatre in the country.

Tianyi’s dedication to her research journey is evident in her recent appearance on CCIR Academy Student Spotlights, where she shared invaluable insights and expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support provided by her professor and the CCIR Academy throughout her research endeavours.
