High School Student Researcher Michael on The Classification of Quasars, Galaxies, and Stars Using ML

Chupeng (Michael) Wei, a student at Nanjing Foreign Language School in China, has always been passionate about physics and mathematics. He has won and consistently ranked at the top in physics competitions at both national and international levels.

In the Physics Bowl Division 1, he ranked in the Global Top 100 (16th place) out of 4000+ participants and in the National Top 10 (2nd place) out of 2500+ participants. He also excelled in the British Physics Olympiad, earning a Top Gold in Round 1 (Global Ranking) out of 2000+ participants and a Global Gold Award in Round 2 (top 33%). Furthermore, he received a First Class Award in the Pan-Pearl River Delta and Chinese Elite Schools Physics Olympiad for the Mechanics Test.

Michael’s accomplishments extend to the China Young Physicists’ Tournament, where he won the Group Second Prize in a field of 10 teams. He also secured a Provincial First Prize in the Chinese Physics Olympiad Round 1 and a Silver Medal in the International Linguistics Olympiad China. Additionally, he contributed to the success of The American Regions Mathematics League, where his team ranked in the Global Top 100.

As a core member of the Young Physicists’ Tournament Club, Michael has inspired his peers with experiments like fractal fingers, demonstrating concepts such as plateau-rayleigh instability. He’s also served as vice president of the Language Society, using language learning to enhance his peers’ understanding of various subjects.

In the CCIR Academy, Michael conducted a research project titled “The Classification of Quasars, Galaxies, and Stars Using Machine-Learning Techniques,” which utilises machine-learning methods to categorise celestial objects. This study aims to automate the classification process of astronomical objects, contributing to advancements in astrophysical research.

Michael’s recent recognition in the CCIR Academy underscores his dedication to research, acknowledging the support he received from his professor and the CCIR Academy.
