Katherine Zhang is a student at Skyline High School in the United States. She is a member of DECA and has competed at both area and state levels. In addition, she serves as Director of Debate in the Junior State of America (JSA). In this role, she trains novice and varsity debaters for competitions. These include the Yale Invitational and the University of Michigan debate tournament.
At CCIR Academy, Katherine researched viral misinformation about immigrants. Her paper, To What Extent Does Viral Misinformation About Immigrants on Algorithm-Driven Platforms Affect Youth Beliefs?, was accepted at the International Forum on Research Excellence (IFoRE), powered by Sigma Xi.
Her study examines how social media misinformation shapes young people’s understanding of immigration. Using survey data, Katherine found a link between higher social media use and lower accuracy in identifying false information. Interestingly, participants showed greater confidence in their ability to identify false information despite their lower accuracy.
The International Forum on Research Excellence (IFoRE) brings researchers and professionals together. The conference promotes high standards in scientific research and encourages global collaboration. It also gives researchers a platform to share their work and connect with colleagues across scientific disciplines.
Congratulations to Katherine on this achievement!
