High School Student Researcher Ayan on Mitochondrial Disease in Large Subunit

Ayan Mammadova is a student at Baku Oxford School in Azerbaijan. She has achieved strong results in several science competitions. For example, she won first place in the International Singapore Vanda Science Olympiad. She also earned first place in the IB Programme National Chemistry Olympiad. In addition, she secured second place in the IB Programme National Biology Olympiad.

Beyond academics, Ayan participates in Model United Nations (MUN) conferences. She has served as Head of Admins, Admin, and Delegate at events in several countries. These include MMUN in New York, KOC University in Turkey, ADA University in Baku, and BOS MUN.

Ayan is also committed to community service. She taught English to refugee children through the UNHCR. Furthermore, she volunteered at a hospital during night shifts. There, she helped with administrative tasks and sewed pillows to provide comfort to patients.

At CCIR Academy, Ayan conducted a research project titled “Structural Basis for Mitochondrial Disease in Large Subunit (LSU) Assembly of Mitochondrial Ribosomes.” Her research focuses on how mitochondrial ribosomes assemble, particularly their large subunit (LSU). She also explores how problems during this process may contribute to mitochondrial diseases.

By examining these mechanisms, the study investigates the relationship between ribosome assembly and mitochondrial disorders. Ayan’s research journey reflects her dedication to scientific discovery. She also appreciates the guidance of her mentor and the support of CCIR Academy.
