High School Student Researcher Maya Arun’s Research on Autism and Emotion Recognition in Children was accepted at the Asia Pacific Autism Conference (APAC 2025)

Asia Pacific Autism Conference (APAC 2025) | Perth

Maya Arun is a student at Cupertino High School in the United States. She has participated in Math Olympiad and Science Olympiad. She was also a finalist at the SCJFL Debate Tournament. In addition, Maya received the Athens Debate Director’s Platinum Award for Outstanding Excellence. She is also a member of the Middle School Honour Society.

At CCIR Academy, Maya’s research paper, The Effects of Autism on Emotion Recognition in Children, was accepted at the Asia Pacific Autism Conference (APAC 2025). Her paper explores how Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect children’s ability to recognise emotions through verbal and visual cues. Specifically, it examines reduced eye contact and differences in interpreting facial expressions and context. It also discusses interventions that may help children with ASD develop their emotional understanding.

The Autism Association of Western Australia hosted APAC 2025 on behalf of the Australian Advisory Board on Autism. The conference brought together autistic individuals, researchers, educators, and policymakers. Under the theme “Creating and Inspiring the Future Together,” participants shared research, experiences, and approaches to understanding autism.

Congratulations to Maya on this achievement!
