High School Student Researcher Diya on Functional Diversity of Tissue Tregs in Chronic Viral Infections

Diya Shetty is a student at Neev Academy in India. She has developed a strong interest in medical biotechnology, molecular biology, and healthcare. Through specialised mentorship programmes and university summer courses, she has explored scientific concepts and gained experience in biological research. Beyond science, she also demonstrates leadership through her involvement in mathematics competitions and school activities.

Medical Biotechnology Research and Mentorship

Diya was one of only 20 students across India selected for the Medical Biotechnology Mentorship Programme. During the programme, she obtained certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and completed a research capstone project.

Her project focused on creating biological networks between microRNA and microRNA targets for Influenza A. Through this work, she explored the relationships between microRNA molecules and their targets in the context of viral infection.

This experience introduced her to biological network analysis and molecular research. Furthermore, completing the capstone project allowed her to apply scientific concepts to a specific area of medical biotechnology.

Exploring Molecular Biology at Brown University

Diya has continued developing her scientific knowledge through university summer programmes. She attended a pre-college course in molecular biology at Brown University.

The course provided an opportunity to explore biological processes and deepen her understanding of molecular science. It also complemented her previous experience in medical biotechnology by expanding her exposure to biological research topics.

Studying Anatomy, Physiology, and Disease at Johns Hopkins

Diya also completed a course in anatomy, physiology, and disease with Johns Hopkins University.

Through this programme, she explored how the human body functions and how diseases affect different biological systems. This experience broadened her understanding of healthcare and complemented her interests in molecular biology and medical biotechnology.

Together, her university learning experiences have allowed her to explore biology from both molecular and human health perspectives.

Leading Mathematics Activities and Competitions

Beyond her scientific interests, Diya serves as the President of her school’s Mathematics Club.

In this role, she participates in Olympiads and other mathematics competitions. Her involvement reflects her interest in analytical thinking and mathematical problem-solving.

Leading the club also provides opportunities to engage with fellow students who share an interest in mathematics. In addition, her experience across science and mathematics demonstrates her enthusiasm for exploring different academic disciplines.

Connecting Mathematics with Medical Science

Diya’s academic journey combines medical biotechnology, molecular biology, and mathematics. Her mentorship experience introduced her to biological networks involving microRNA and Influenza A, while her university courses expanded her understanding of molecular processes and human health.

Meanwhile, her leadership in the Mathematics Club allows her to pursue analytical challenges beyond science. Together, these experiences provide a foundation for further exploration in biotechnology, biomedical research, and interdisciplinary scientific study.
